Soteria
While not an in engine game project, this assignment allowed us to practice working in a team and brainstorming game mechanics. We were given a reference video of a robot exploring a planet, and based off this our team had to create a game concept and put together a video pitch to sell our idea. The end product was Soteria, a sci-fi survival game set in a time when humanity is on the brink of destruction and the player is the last hope for survival.
Video Pitch
Our Reference Video
Since this assignment was for us all to grow our ability to communicate and form unique game mechanics, we ended up developing the functionality of our game entirely as a team with no one person having more say over the final result. However, when it came to building out the different elements of our pitch and bringing our idea to life we split off a bit more into diverse roles. My specific role on the team was that of story and script writer. Once we had fleshed out the basic mechanics of our game I was able to take that and create a backstory to give our ideas more substance. Though not all of this was necessary to include in our video pitch, it was extremely helpful to make sure we were all on the same page for what our game was about and allowed us to continue building mechanics around the setting of our game.
When it came to writing the script for the video the entire team was heavily involved in order to make sure we were on the same page about our final product, however I took the lead in finding the right words to express our idea. By having one person lead the script writing we were able to ensure that it had a consistent writing style, but continuous input from the rest of the team made sure it fully encapsulated our vision.
